We were tasked with creating a title sequence for one of four Wes Anderson films as part of my BFA in Motion Media Design. I selected The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou as it is not only one of my favorite films, but it also provided the opportunity for me to concept and produce a live action motion piece.
I wanted to capture the essence of both The Life Aquatic and Wes Anderson in my title sequence. My concept revolved around keeping everything very tactile and compositionally planned out. Using the rope as a constant traveler among the scenes, symmetry in the guitar shot, a vague yet specific group of key items from the film, and boat cabin-like lighting, I was able to achieve this. All the objects seen in the shot were either collected or created by myself. We also employed a lighting technique that caused the light o bounce throughout the scene in wave like patterns.
